Trend

The general direction price is moving over time: up, down, or sideways.

A trend is the overall direction of price over a period of time. In an uptrend, price makes higher highs and higher lows, like climbing stairs. In a downtrend, it makes lower highs and lower lows. When it moves sideways between two levels, that is called a range.

Trends exist on every timeframe. A market can be rising on a daily chart while falling on an hourly chart, which is why traders check more than one timeframe before deciding.

Many beginner mistakes come from fighting the trend. Spotting the direction first, before looking for a trade, keeps your plan on the same side as the bigger move.

Example: a price chart shows peaks at $10, $12 and $14, with dips at $9, $11 and $13. Each high and each low is higher than the last, so it is an uptrend.
